European Year of Volunteering 2011

In 2011 the Good Network Foundation E-volunteering team of the  carried out the Flagship Project of the European Year of Volunteering 2011 called ‘The Values and Activities of Volunteering and E-volunteering’. The project was presented with a subsidy of the European Commission and functioned under the auspices of the Polish Presidency in the EU.

The project covered:

  1. the European edition of the ‘Discover E-volunteering’ competition that promotes the application of modern technology in the volunteering projects,
  2. the Polish social campaign ‘Key Values of Volunteering’ that promoted various forms of volunteering. As a part of the project, a qualitative survey on volunteering was carried out in Poland for the first time. We also organized a photo exhibition and a debate in the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, during which the conclusions from the survey were presented. The invited guests, who represented different volunteering societies, tried to reflect in groups on the three following problems:
  • do – as the stereotype says – volunteers have to sacrifice themselves?
  • Is an activist who changes the world also a volunteer?
  • What values are the most important in volunteering?

The group discussions were led by journalists who are devoted to social topics: Mrs Anna Kołtunowicz, Mrs Justyna Dżbik, Mr Romuald Wójcik and Mr Dariusz Bugalski.

The already drawn conclusions were summed up and commented by the invited experts:

  • Mr Tomasz Bratek, the Director of the National Agency of the „Youth in Action” Programme,
  • Mrs Jadwiga Czartoryska, the President of the Orange Foundation, the Mentor of the Dobra Sieć Foundation,
  • Mr Paweł Łukasiak, the President of the Academy for the Development of Philantropy in Poland, the Mentor of the Dobra Sieć Foundation,
  • Mrs Maria Popielawska, the Coordinator of Volunteering, EURO 2012 Ltd.
  • Mr Dariusz Pietrowski, the President of the Volunteering Centre in Warsaw,
  • Mr Norbert Szczepański, the Director of the Centre of Thought of John Paul II,
  • Mr Krzysztof Więckiewicz, the Director of the Public Benefit Department in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

The debate was led by Dorota Stronkowska from the Academy for the Development of Filantropy in Poland.
